The peninsula was divided after World War II into a Russian-backed north (The People's Democratic Republic) and the American-backed south (The Republic of Korea. Both side claimed that right to the other half in an effort to unify both. This division was the result of the occupation of Korea by the communists after the end of the war with the country eventually being divided at the 38th parallel.
In June 1950, North Korea launched a surprise attack against the south and the capital Seoul fell. When July came by, American troops had entered the war but on the side of South Korea. The fight on the Korean peninsula was a symbol of the global struggle between good and evil. The North Korean army was pushed into Seoul which was the South Korean capital.
The Domino Theory is one of the reasons. China turned Communist in 1949. So Truman believed that, if one country fell to Communism. then other would follow. Like a line of dominoes. Truman was worried that, if Korea feel, the next domino would be Japan. Japan was a very important for American trade. This probably was the reason why America started to get involved.
Finally, in July 1053, the Korean War came to an end but this did not go without any loses. Sadly Korea did not gain anything out of this war but there were mainly loses. 1.3 million South Korean soldiers were found dead or wounded after this hot war. 520,000 North Korean Military soldiers were dead or wounded. Also over 3 million civilians had died during this war. Most of Korea's industry was destroyed. Their farm lands and agriculture were ruined. And there was millions of refugees.
